What is the Employee Provident Fund Scheme?
Employee Provident Fund scheme is the government scheme provided to the employees who work for Government or private organization under the Employee Provident Fund Organization.
In this scheme, employee and employer both contribute an equal portion of employee’s salary i.e. 12% of basic salary + D.A. on a monthly basis. The same amount will be deposited into the EPFO account by the employer every month. The employee will get an interest of around 8% per annum. The rate of interest is decided on a quarterly basis by the EPFO commission.
An employee can avail the benefits of the EPF amount upon his/her retirement or in the case he/she resigns from the organization. The employee can get the income tax rebate benefit on the contribution up to Rs. 1.5lakhs per annum.
EPF Withdrawal
An employee can withdraw his/her PF amount under two scenarios:
- Employee gets retired
- An employee resigns the current organization
There are offline and online ways of processing EPF withdrawal. Many people are preferring an online way of PF withdrawal as it’s easy and fast. It will take around 30 days of time once you submit the withdrawal claim. The amount would be directly credited to the beneficiary’s bank account.
After submitting the withdrawal claim, if you want to check the status of your claim, there are four ways you can check the claim status. The prerequisite condition for this is that you must have your UAN number with you.
How to Check EPF / UAN Claim Status?
The methods for checking UAN claim status are as under.
- Through EPFO Portal
- By giving a missed call
- Through sending SMS
- Through Umang mobile app
- By entering the PF account number
Employees can check the status of their PF withdrawal claim once they have applied for EPF withdrawal. The process has become simple after the introduction of the UAN (Universal Account Number) in 2013. With the help of UAN number, the claim process can be done online. Before proceeding for the withdrawal it is mandatory for the employees to activate their UAN number.
There are some prerequisite thing that you must keep ready before you check your claim status. They are:
- UAN number
- Establishment and its extension details
- Employer’s regional office
- Company details
- Mobile number (registered with UAN number)
Checking the UAN claim status through EPFO Portal
- To check the PF claim status through EPFO portal, you first need to visit the EPFO portal.
- Go to the “our services” tab and click on the second tab i.e. “For Employees”
- Now you need to click on the “Know your claim status” The link fo the same is under “Services”
- On the next page, you must enter your UAN number and CAPTCHA to verify that you are human.
- Now you need to enter the PF Number and Establishment number
- After all the details are filled in, click on the submit button.
- The status of your UAN claim will be display on the screen.
The EPFO portal also sends SMS to the employee while he/she makes the withdrawal application. The stages at which the SMS is sent is as below.
- After submission of the EPF withdrawal claim.
- On the successful payment of the EPF withdrawal to the bank account.
There is a UAN portal as well where the employee can check the withdrawal claim status. Log in with your UAN number and password. Then go to the “Track claim status”. After clicking on the link, it will direct you to another page where your claim status will be displayed.
EPF withdrawal status through SMS
This is another method by which you can easily check the claim status of your EPF by sending an SMS as per the syntax is given below.
The prerequisite for this method is you must have linked your mobile number with the UAN number first. As the employee is required to send the SMS from that registered mobile number only.
The format for sending SMS is as below.
<EPFOHO> <UAN> <LAN>
Where <EPFOH> is the EPFO regional office
<UAN> is your UAN number
<LAN> is the language you wish to receive the status on your mobile.

Check UAN claim status by giving a missed call
There is another way to check the UAN claim status by giving a missed call to 011-22901406 from the registered mobile number of the employee. For this method to work, the employee must link his mobile number with UAN number. The employee’s Aadhaar number also must be linked to the UAN number. Other details like PAN number and bank details are also required to be accurate and updated on the EPFO portal.
The employee just needs to dial the above-given number from the registered mobile number. After two rings, the call will be auto disconnected. After that, within a few seconds, you will get an SMS on your mobile number with the claim status details.
